The weekend of August 3rd, 4th and 5th saw the return of USC, Ultimate Street Car, at Santa Pod Raceway in Wellingborough. Santa Pod is the home of European Drag Racing and host to the televised FIA European Drag Racing Championships – but this weekend, was transformed into a full on festival of cars, entertainment and music.
The show attracts thousands of people each and every year – and this year, the entertainment line up for the evenings was one of the best we have seen with performances by new-school dubstep icons Modestep and drum and bass legends Pendulum and Fabio & Grooverider performing DJ sets alongside old school rave antics from B2T and Slipmat. When you add this to the Autoglym Show and Shine, Drift Experience and Show and Go, it was an all encompassing event for the modified auto enthusiast.
We attended USC on the Sunday, with the purpose of uniting the winner of our Wheel Whores competition with their chosen prize. Ben, our winner, chose a set of four 4×100 7×16″ Calibre Vintage, finished in Black with deep polished dish to suit his Volkswagen Polo. We left Wheelwright HQ in the morning and arrived at Santa Pod around midday after a stunning drive around the M25, M1 and the tighter roads of the village of Wellingborough. The skies were consistently threatening to open and upon our arrival, torrential downpours began – the showers were shortlived, but erratic – leading to dwindling on-track action from the RWYB (“Run What You Brung”) and official Drag categories. It was nice to spot many of our wheels on customer vehicles in the show areas including a smart Vauxhall Corsa C with Calibre Dub.
Despite the rain, people seemed to be enjoying themselves amongst the stalls and stands, demos and intermittent track action. When entering the raceway, we were greeted by some Moto-X and Monster Truck stunt action – very impressive indeed. Having then walked past the camping and car park, with many cars featuring our wheels, we walked around the track to the area behind the grandstand where exhibitors and the main stage were to be found. We managed to haul our treasure to the Wheel Whores stand, ready to present to our winner.
The team from Wheel Whores also adorned our winner with a Free T-Shirt, and decal for his car – this should top it all off and we can’t wait to see the photos of our wheels united with his car in the not-too-distant future. Watch this space for more photographs and new competitions…
